At the beginning of his interview, Kanyinke Sena talks about his career and explains how he became interested and personally involved in issues related to Indigenous Peoples. He acknowledges that it is a difficult job, which requires patience because results are not immediate, and which may also be dangerous sometimes because many issues of power are at stake when it comes to issues related to territories and natural resources, for example. There are few Indigenous Peoples’ rights defenders and this job requires to be travelling all the time, which may sometimes entail being spread too thin.

Then, he mentions some of the major advances in Africa regarding the recognition of the existence of Indigenous Peoples and the protection of their lands and resources. He calls for more concerted actions between the different organizations and regions of Africa, but also points out the importance of bringing in young defenders, who are now educated and specialized. It is indeed very important to show the young generation that it is possible to be an activist and to be able to defend both the interests of their community and their own, by developing their expertise in one of the many areas that need to be addressed.

Finally, he encourages young people to specialize and hopes that forums and seminars can be organized for them, so that they can share their ideas, not only in Africa but also with young people from other parts of the world.

Al principio de su entrevista, Kanyinke Sena habla de su trayectoria y explica cómo llegó a interesarse e implicarse personalmente en los temas relacionados con los Pueblos Indígenas. Reconoce que es un trabajo difícil, que requiere paciencia porque los resultados no son inmediatos y que también puede ser peligroso a veces ya que hay muchas relaciones de poder en juego con respecto a cuestiones de territorios y los recursos naturales, por ejemplo. Hay pocos defensores de los derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas y este trabajo obliga a estar siempre de viaje, lo que a veces puede llevarlo a uno a intentar abarcar demasiado.

Luego, menciona algunos de los principales avances en África con respecto al reconocimiento de la existencia de los Pueblos Indígenas y la protección de sus tierras y recursos. Pide más acciones concertadas entre las diferentes organizaciones y regiones de África, pero también subraya la importancia de integrar a jóvenes defensores, que ahora están educados y especializados. En efecto, es muy importante enseñarle a la generación más joven que es posible ser un activista y ser capaz de defender tanto los intereses de su comunidad como sus propios intereses, eligiendo especializarse en uno de los numerosos temas por tratar.

Finalmente, anima a los jóvenes a especializarse y espera que se puedan organizar foros y seminarios para ellos, para que puedan compartir sus ideas, no sólo en África sino también con jóvenes de otras partes del mundo.
